Cocoa, one of the never-ending riches of the new world” was imported in Europe in the XVI century, but it was only in the following century, along with the development of the “boteghe da caffè” (coffee houses), that the pleasure of sipping a cup of coffee or hot chocolate became a “rite”. The same happened at Florian’s, opened by Floriano Francesconi in 1720 in the heart of Venice, Saint Mark’s Sqaure, where it stands till today.
During the centuries, both Venetians and foreingner, famous people and commoners, fell into the habit to go to Florian’s, sit and drink a coffee or a hot chocolate.
The chocolate served at Caffè Florian has centuries of tradition (and legend) behind it. The story tell that Casanova himself used to prepare his special hot chocolate recipe flavoured with aphrodisiac spices to seduce the women he was interested into.
That is why the Florian hot chocolate and cocoa powder are renowned and appreciated all over the world, thank to the fine fragrance and the flavour’s intensity coming from the cocoa beans of Central Africa. The pure cocoa is a very good ingredient to make a wide range of desserts, from the Tiramisu to the ice cream; following the original recipe, it can be also used for prepare a delicious cup of hot cocoa, adding milk, sugar and potato starch.
