Esse Biscuits

Esse or Buranei biscuits come from Burano, the multicoloured island of fishermen that is famous for its lacework.
The name derive from their “S” shape.
These biscuits were made by the fishermen’s and sailors wives and they acted as a food store because they keep well even in bad weather and damp condition. They were probably not sweet at the beginning but with the addition of molasses, and sugar later, became the traditional Easter sweetmeat.
